Nefrontida Nephrology Center: Two Years of Advanced Healthcare Services – Hilton Nicosia Event, March 2024

Nefrontida celebrated its second anniversary of successful operation with a special and informative event held on Tuesday, March 19, at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, attended by 200 guests from the medical community, representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Health Insurance Organization (HIO), collaborators, and patient associations.

The event began with a welcoming address by the Minister of Health, Mr. Michalis Damianos, who emphasized that the number of patients suffering from nephrological conditions continues to rise both globally and in Cyprus. He highlighted that a significant portion of healthcare expenditure is allocated to nephrology due to the high cost of treatments. Furthermore, he noted that the establishment of new centers offers patients more treatment options and fosters healthy competition. The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that genuinely improve patients’ quality of life, and concluded by congratulating Nefrontida Nephrology Center for its dedication to providing high-quality care and service to its patients.

Mrs. Eleni Georgiou Stylianou, General Director of Nefrontida, welcomed the attendees and expressed her sincere appreciation to the Center’s physicians and nursing staff, whose professionalism, expertise, and dedication ensure the consistently high quality of Nefrontida’s services. She also presented the Center’s latest social responsibility initiative — the creation of the cookbook “Nephro-Gastronomy: Creative Recipes and Tips for Healthy Eating.” This publication forms part of Nefrontida’s social contribution to support patients with kidney disease in Cyprus. It contains a collection of carefully designed recipes, adapted to the nutritional needs and restrictions of kidney patients, and will be distributed free of charge to all hemodialysis patients across the island. Beyond its practical value, the project also seeks to raise public awareness about kidney disease and the importance of nutrition in its management.

The Medical Director of Nefrontida, Dr. Kyriakos Ioannou, then presented the Center’s patient-centered philosophy, organizational structure, advanced medical services, and holistic approach to nephrology — the features that define Nefrontida. He highlighted the Center’s vision to operate “Beyond a Hemodialysis Unit,” providing comprehensive nephrology services that extend beyond dialysis care. Dr. Ioannou also emphasized the Center’s contributions to education and research, through valuable collaborations with the School of Medicine of the European University Cyprus and the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Cyprus.

A presentation of statistical data followed, showcasing the impressive achievements of the Center in less than two years since its establishment. Dr. Spyros Koursoumpas noted that within 17 months of operation, Nefrontida had conducted 15,922 hemodialysis sessions, 638 day-care hospitalizations, and 276 plasmapheresis sessions — clear indicators of its effective and growing service capacity.

Dr. Andreas Kousios then spoke about kidney transplantation, emphasizing that it remains the most effective treatment for end-stage renal disease. He noted that Nefrontida prioritizes the promotion of kidney transplantation, as demonstrated by the fact that nine Nefrontida patients successfully underwent kidney transplants within just one year of the launch of the Center’s pre-transplant program — representing 30% of all transplants performed annually in Cyprus.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Mr. George Georgiou, Founder and Visionary of Nefrontida, who thanked all attendees and reaffirmed the Center’s commitment to continue offering advanced nephrology services with even greater enthusiasm and dedication — always with the goal of improving the quality of life of patients living with kidney disease.
