We are delighted and proud to announce that Dr. Andreas Kousios, nephrologist at Nefrontida, led the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) writing group responsible for developing a new European report on living kidney donation.
The report, developed by the European Kidney Transplant Association (EKITA) of ESOT in collaboration with the DESCaRTES Working Group of the European Renal Association (ERA), outlines a future European strategy for strengthening living kidney donation and proposes specific actions to improve access to transplantation across Europe.
The work was published in Transplant International, the official scientific journal of ESOT, and highlights the need for:
- • Equitable access to kidney transplantation
- • Protection, support, and long-term follow-up of living donors
- • High-quality, evidence-based care across European healthcare systems
- • Stronger international collaboration and exchange of best practices
Living donor kidney transplantation remains the best treatment option for many patients with kidney failure, offering improved survival and quality of life. This initiative represents an important milestone towards promoting a more equitable, safer, and more effective transplantation system across Europe.
